Ignite Pilates Philosophy


As a Pilates teacher, I’m often asked what Pilates can do for a person’s body. I get asked questions such as:

  1. How much weight will I lose doing Pilates?

  2. Will Pilates make my muscles bigger (aka, bulky)?

  3. It’s Pilates just stretching, like yoga?

So, this got me thinking that I should talk about my Pilates philosophy.

In a previous blog, I described what Pilates is:

Pilates is a low-impact exercise that emphasizes proper postural alignment, core strength and muscle balance. It’s a “method of exercise” that uses spring driven machines as well as a series of floor exercises that helps improve flexibility, strength and endurance and concentration—helping clients strengthen their abdomen, back, and pelvis as well as their glutes (butt) and legs. Pilates is designed to stretch, strengthen and balance the body from the core out. A stable core provides you with a solid foundation for any movement. After a few weeks of attending Pilates classes, clients gain flexibility, see their posture improve, as well as notice that they are getting stronger, have more defined muscles, and have a stronger sense of well-being.

And, for a little more background: The movement was created by Joseph Pilates and it has been around since the 20s. What I will teach you when you come into Ignite Pilates in Gillette, Wyoming is based on his principles and techniques developed by Peak Pilates® where I have earned certification.

I’ve been reading a book by Nicola Conraths-Lange called Survival Skills for Pilates Teachers: Thriving in the mind-body fitness world, and there was something in there that truly spoke to me and I wanted to share it with you. On Page 27, the book lists out what Pilates IS and what it is NOT to the author.

Pilates IS:

  • An exercise method

  • A philosophy

  • Strengthening

  • Balancing

  • Mindful

  • Anaerobic

  • Articulating/Isotonic

  • A constant in your life

Pilates is NOT:

  • A team sport

  • A trend

  • Weight management

  • Competitive

  • Repetitive or fast

  • Aerobic

  • Isometric

This is the Ignite Pilates philosophy:

Pilates is about learning how to use your body efficiently and correctly. Proper movement helps to strengthen the body, and movement heals. Pilates is all about a healthy spine! Keep your spine healthy and you will never have to wear Velcro shoes! (Ask me about this when you’re in the studio!)

So:

  • You will not lose weight doing Pilates at Ignite Pilates—if you want to lose weight, consider checking out what you need to change in your diet.

  • You will not get bulky muscles by doing Pilates with me.

  • You will not come to a Pilates session with me at Ignite, and sweat buckets, pass out from working too hard, or leave drenched in sweat.

  • The day after you take a Pilates session with me at Ignite, you will not be so sore you won’t be able to move. No exercise in Pilates should cause pain—at all. I want you to listen to your body and only take it as far as you want to. I believe that Pilates is meant to teach you a new way to connect with your body, not to beat it.
