There’s this conversation that I keep having with people that’s kind of frustrating to me. It goes a little something like this:
Potential Client: What does one private Pilates session at Ignite cost? Me: It’s $37.50. Potential Client: Boy. That’s a lot of money. What’s the cost of an eight week TRX session? Me: Well, an eight-week session will run you $110, which equates to $6 per class. Plus, you get Pilates mat classes for free (up to three a week). Potential Client: Why does it cost so much?
Really. You think it costs a lot to work out and stay healthy? Then you better check out what it costs to be ill:
According to the American Diabetes Association's Economic Costs of Diabetes in the U.S. in 2012, the average medical expenditure for people with diagnosed diabetes is about $13,700 per year, of which about $7,900 is due to diabetes. I pulled this info from the CDC. Oh, and FYI, diabetes lists as the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.
What about the costs of heart disease, which happens to be the No. 1 leading cause of death in the United States? Well, in a 2010 study, the average cost of direct medical care related to cardiovascular disease was roughly $18,953; though, there were several variances (depending upon the person’s health, how many heart attacks they have had, and so forth). This was reported in the American Journal of Managed Care, However, the CDC reports that treatment of heart disease accounts for about $1 of every $6 spent on health care in this country. YIKES!
OK. What about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which is the third most common cause of death in the United States? In a study published in 2010 reported in a Lung Institute blog, researchers examined 37,089 COPD patients, and found that their costs ranged from $3,238 to $76,159.
Let’s try this again: A year’s worth of TRX: $715-ish. 12 months of unlimited Pilates sessions (2-3 times a week) each month: $2,400.
Be healthy and save yourself some cash.
